Asia Smith is a Law Clerk from the University of San Diego School of Law. Ms. Smith supports our attorneys with client matters before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Franchise Tax Board (FTB), Employment Development Department (EDD), and California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDFTA). Working directly with Of Counsel Andrea Cisneros Valdez, Asia Smith specifically assists on International Tax related matters.
Originally from Chula Vista, CA, Asia graduated Magna cum laude from San Diego State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with a double minor in Rhetoric and Writing Studies, and Communications. During this time, she served as the Vice President of the Mock Trial Team competing in several criminal and civil mock trials in California and Arizona. Asia also participated in the annual Student Research Symposium presenting original research data regarding workplace communication. In addition, Ms. Smith worked at The Sexton Law Firm as a Bankruptcy Legal Assistant concentrating on Chapter 7 and Chapter13 bankruptcy cases.
In addition to her law school studies, Ms. Smith volunteers as a Case Representative in USD’s State Income Tax Clinic where she represents low-income taxpayers by attending hearings, providing client counseling, and client communication with the Franchise Tax Board. Ms. Smith also served on the board of USD’s Tax Law Society as President for two consecutive years and is an avid member of USD’s Mock Trial Team. In the fall of 2022, Asia and her Mock Trial team received a First-Place finish at the Association of Business Trial Lawyer’s competition.
Ms. Smith has also served as a Law Clerk at the United States Trustee’s Office in San Diego working on Chapter 11 bankruptcy matters, as a Law Clerk at the United States Attorney’s Office in their OCDEF and Human Trafficking department conducting research and observing criminal trials and, she most recently worked as a Law Clerk at Milikowsky Tax Law contributing on Research and Development tax issues.
Ms. Smith brings additional value to RJS LAW as a commissioned California Notary Public.
Asia enjoys spending time with her family, and attending her brother’s basketball games and sister’s volleyball games over the weekends. In addition to family, she loves being with her two dogs (Taco and Chewbacca) and going to the beach.
