IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service
The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is an independent service within the IRS which helps taxpayers resolve problems with the IRS and recommend changes which prevent any problems in the future. If you qualify, the service can help if: your problems with the IRS are causing financial hardship for you, your family, or your business; you are, or your business is, facing immediate threat of adverse action; or if the IRS is not responding to your calls and questions and you are facing imminent threat of enforcement action. If you take advantage of this service you will be assigned an advocate near you, free of charge, who will listen to your individual situation and help you understand what needs to be done to resolve the problems you are experiencing!
In the 2012 fiscal year, the TAS received 220,000 cases and provided either a full or partial refund to the taxpayers in nearly 77 percent of the cases it closed! We know tax problems are often times confusing, and the Taxpayer Advocate Service is considered to be the voice of the taxpayer. They exist to “ensure that every taxpayer is treated fairly, and that you know and understand your rights.” (“Who We Are”). The advocate assigned to your case will help you resolve your problems with the IRS, and will attempt to fix any systemic problems which may exist within the IRS which arise from your case and these problems are then reported to Congress. The Taxpayer Advocate Service is your ally at the IRS!
